In the 19th century criminologists began to move away from the Classical philosophy that assumes crime is the result of free will and began to move toward a more scientific view of human behavior. The Positivist philosophy assumes that crime is the result of internal or external factors that determine behavior choices and that criminal behavior is outside of the control of the individual.
