There is a compelling relationship between the concepts of multicultural competence and fair and equitable policing. The idea of multicultural competence in policing refers to the way of promoting awareness of the various dynamics in the way people from different cultural groups interact. The process involves development of proper policies as well as skills of exhibited by police staff which empowers them to deal with the dynamics prevalent in communities more effectively. On the other hand, fair and equitable policing is driven by the need t establish a positive relationship between the members of the community and police staff. The implication of this is that police staff are empowered through training to respond to different cultural issues and avoid conflicts in the long run. Deliberate steps and initiatives are implemented regarding the role of the police as far as protecting the diverse interests of a multicultural society is concerned
Scholars posit that there is a need to adopt policies that have the potential to address a myriad of cultural issues so as to make policing more effective. Some of the proposed initiatives include: minimizing cases of racial stereotypes, reduction in the use of excessive force by police and adoption of strategies that aim at improving cooperation between the community members and police staff. There was a need to enhance information sharing and other self policing practices that can in one way or another in contribution to positive outcomes in order to reduce crime.
One important issue in regard to multicultural competence and fair and equitable policing is that it is possible to reduce the rate of crime if the police make a bold move in adopting a wider spectrum of their community through various policing that largely focuses on solving problems in the community (Ismaili , 2011). It is the prerogative of the police to provide conditions that facilitate collaboration between the police staff and community members. It is therefore expected that police should respect the diversity in the population and equally posses cultural knowledge of the members of the community. Having such knowledge assist the police to provide fair and equitable policing. In a nutshell, the police have to bear the responsibility of providing quality services to the people. During the process of hiring, it is important to assess the suitability of candidates by basing on attributes such as loyalty, honesty and cultural competence (Stevens, 2017).
