Should schools introduce a values-centered curriculum for all students?
Good question! What comes to mind when you hear the word values? Most individuals believe values are beliefs that motivate people to act one way or another. Values are believed to serve as a guide for human behavior. People also tend to believe that those values are “right” because they are the values of their culture.
According to Glendale (2018), “Values are the rules by which we make decisions about right and wrong, should and should not, good, and bad. Morals have a greater social element and are more universally accepted” (p.213). However, ethics relate more to values within a given context, such as professional ethics or academic ethics. All these terms relate to what we call “character,” yet it seems that character encompasses more than values, morality, and ethics. Leadership, for example, can be thought of as a character trait, yet by it is very definition (the ability to lead others), this trait cannot be exhibited by every individual of a group within a specific context. For example, a few must lead, and others must follow. Nevertheless, educational institutions are all based on and organized around this concept.
In today’s time, especially where there is a massive crisis of moral values in society, values- centered education proves to be the solution. For example, modeling is another approach in transmitting values in the classroom. Values are accomplished when students present and conduct themselves by a certain set of values.
Therefore, schools should introduce a values-centered curriculum for all students. The values explicitly taught are also the values modeled in the teaching and learning process and school activity. Values education is about how students are taught as what they are taught (Smithfield, 2021). Also, a values-centered curriculum helps provides techniques for decision making, good choices, acceptance, diversity, and appropriate behaviors.
