Instructions – Final Project
Objectives:
Knowledge: Define key terms about mythological literature, as
well as art iconography, all in your own words.
Understanding: Discuss how myths remain in images throughout
history.
Analysis: Establish how mythology and its relationship to the
human condition can relate to some aspect of your life.
Outcomes:
Information literacy: Ability to analyze, synthesize, and evaluate
information.
Critical thinking: Ability to effectively evaluate and reflect upon
the information gathered.
Communication: Ability to communicate information effectively
using grammatically correct standard American English, proper
diction, appropriate tone, and correct word usage
Global sociocultural responsibility: Understand and respect
diverse historical, social, and/or cultural aspects, settings and
frames; identify the ways in which myths reflect society’s views of
gender, race, class, or sexual identities.
Instructions:
Research and identify myths from Non-Western cultures. That is:
Native Americas (North, Central, and South America, and the
Caribbean), Africa, India, Asia, Oceania, the Polynesian triangle. It
is also acceptable to chose Norse, Celtic; as well as myths,
legends, or folk tales from Russia, the Muslim tradition, or the
Jewish tradition.
Option 1:
Chose ONE, and document the story – that is, write a brief summary of
the story – not a deity/character, but the story . This usually involve
several deities or characters. You can use books, magazines, and
online sources, but the story need to be summarized and approached
in your own words (NO copy/paste). Again, you will be working with
only ONE story.
– Select stories that have not been discussed in class presentations, or
submitted in previous assignments. Points will be deducted for re-use
of already researched or discussed material. Myths or legends from
the Greco-Roman tradition are NOT acceptable, as they were
already approached in previous projects.
– Include an artwork that depicts of your selected story. Remember:
the comparison between the story and the image works better when
the image portrays a scene/plot, rather than a portraiture-like
representation. Images must be of acceptable resolution and size (at
least 4” x 4”), and adequately identified: Title of the image, year of
completion, full name of the artist (if available).
– Include the sources used in your research and image selection in a
separate page.
– You can submit your work in .doc, .ppt, or .pdf formats.
Option 2:
Do the same research and selection as in Option 1, but instead of
submitting a paper you will create a video.
– You must show an image of your selected story in the video.
– Your discussion should last between 3-5 minutes
– A document with your selected image and the sources you used for
your research must be submitted as an attachment to your
assignment.
What you must discuss:
To which culture/time does the myth or story belong?
(Aztec, Celtic, Japanese, etc…)
To what category/ies does the story belong? (Use
categories in Module 2 )
Answer as applies: What is the purpose of the myth or
story you selected- what does it justify, teach, or
illustrate? Does it relate to our own society or daily life in
any way? How does the story contribute to our sense of
global sociocultural responsibility?
Answer as applies: Express how does that myth make
you feel. Why are you drawn to it? Do you identify
yourself, in any way, to its characters? Why did you
choose the image included?
This assignment must be completed individually. Unacceptable
similarities between works will incur a 0 to both parties.
Due to the proximity to the end of the term, late submissions will
not be accepted.
Points: 50

These are only suggestions of how you should organize your work.
Feel free to make adjustments. All questions in the instructions must
be answered, regardless if they are not presented in these examples. I
am using a Greco-Roman myth, but remember that for the purpose of
this project, Greco-Roman stories are not acceptable.
