Grade 10 MYP Sciences – Criteria Ai and D summative assessment
Unit: Chemical Reactions
Global Context: Conservation
Statement of inquiry:The consideration of conditions and
consequences lead to conservation within a system.
Title: How can technology be used to solve a problem created through the human
race’s use of fossil fuels?
Assessment Criteria: All strands from Criteria D (Reflecting on the impacts of
science) and strand Ai (Knowledge and understanding)
Assignment Description:
You are working as a journalist. You are going to write an essay about a technology that
solves a problem linked to human use of fossil fuels. Your essay would be posted in a Science
magazine for High School students.
Assignment Details:
The final essay:
• is to be a minimum of 800 and a maximum of 1000 words (not including bibliography)
• should include chemical names, reactions and formulas
• should contain acknowledgement of any sources used and presented in the APA format.
• has font: Arial or Times New Roman, size 12
• has double spacing
• contains a minimum number of cited sources: Three

• should be uploaded as a Microsoft word file or an Adobe Acrobat pdf file to Managebac.
Task Explanation:
In a Criterion D task it is important to choose a problem that science is trying to solve. You
must be able to research, analyse and evaluate how well the science is applied or interacts
with the environment and potentially others of the following factors; moral, ethical, social,
economic, political, cultural. In the table below you will find possible topics and research
questions. You may use one of these questions to formulate your own question.
Topics Example questions
Plastics How effective is science in producing biodegradable plastics and
reducing plastic pollution in Greece?
Marine pollution How effective is science in reducing the risks of oil spills and reducing
their social impact after the spills?
Air pollution How effective is the technology that can reduce sulfur pollution from
coal combustion in power stations?
How effective is the technology of electric cars in reducing air pollution
from petroleum powered vehicles?
Global warming How effective are the technologies being used in renewable energy
production to reduce global warming?
Fuels How effective is science in improving fuel for high performance cars
and reducing polluting emissions?
Manufacturing synthetic
materials
How effective is technology at replacing crude oil as a starting
material in manufacturing material for sportswear?

Include the main points you will include in each of the sections listed below. List each point as a
bullet and add the reference. Use the structure described below.
Title: …………………
Paragraph 1: Introduction to outline what will be discussed in the essay and why it is important.
Include your thesis statement
Ex.
● In this essay the advantages and limitations of (the scientific ideas or processes) with
regard to (environmental/social/economic/political/cultural/ethical) factors related to
(problem linked to fossil fuels) will be discussed and evaluated.
OR
● In this essay it will be argued that (insert thesis statement here)…………
Paragraph 2: Explain the problem that you have chosen and how it is linked to fossil fuels.
Paragraph 3: Explain the science involved in solving the problem.
Paragraph 4: Evaluation of the benefits and limitations of the science used to solve the problem.
Aim to answer the question: ‘How well does science solve the problem?’
Paragraph 5: Conclusion to summarize the main ideas of the essay and the main issue. End with a
recommendation/evaluation based on the extent to which science solves the problem.
