Case Analysis
Problems from the Case
- John Amasi (director of production and engineering at RL Wolf) is making important decisions in the organization without involvement of the employees.
- The problem is a huge problem for an organization that is undergoing a significant growth and expansion like RL Wolf. Amasi makes his decisions concerning the implementation of self-directed teams (SDTs) after getting the reports about the 30-40% improvement reports on matters of productivity. Amasi just made the decision of implementing SDTs without evaluating further about it or even the involvement of the employees to get their views.
- Employees lacks unions to champion for their rights like working overtime without pay because Amasi did not want the new plant unionized.
- Employees are complaining that they are working overtime and feels that they will not be paid for the extra time since there are no structures that allow discussion of the compensation of such nature. Unions would have helped much for them to champion for their rights as a team of all the three plants under RL Wolf to make sure that employees are not mistreated.
III. Winslow’s role of allocating human resources is challenging because of the misunderstanding that the employees had of his intentions.
- Employees refused to engage in the SDT process and instead sat silently and impatiently during team meetings hosted in the factory’s cafeteria, making the hiring work difficult for Winslow. The concept of employee empowerment was misinterpreted by some employees which led to them being fired.
