- Assignment 2 – Critical appraisal of research paper (2000 words).
The followings are some guidelines you may find it helpful for constructing the assessment.
- Choose one of the artilce listed on LG page 11, they are available under “Assessment 2”
- Critique the article based on the correct checklist for the research design of the study being evaluated. Please see attached the check list for your reference.

- Assessment should be written in essay format (Introduction, body and conclusion). Headings in the checklist could be used in bod of discussion. It should be presented in academic writing, point forms are not recommended.
- This is a critical appraisal that the quality of the paper should be critically analysed in terms of the sections that suggested in the checklist. In other words, the focus is the research methodology not the health issue. For example, quantitative methodology, RCT, is used in the study. Why or why not is this methodology appropriate and how this are justified. Your critic and analyse should be supported/justified with academic references.
Highly recommend:
- Go through the two articles thoroughly, choose one asap. They are either qualiative or quantitative. There is no such easier one, id depends on personal preference and interest.
- Get yourself famililar with the methodology (either Quant or Qual), study design, sample, sampling technique, data collection, analysis and finding presentation.
- Highlight the method in the aritlce and the study aim, is the method appropriate to achieve the study aim?

- Conclusion is to summarize what you have done in this essay, not the conclusion of the article (about 100 words).
Introduction (100 – 150 words)
Background information about critical appraisal

Concluding sentient to highlight the aim of this essay
Body of discussion – can use the item in checklist as subheadings
Research methodology
Blue – opening sentence (optional)
Red – “what” identification of study information from the article
Green – “why” justification – how is it appropriate?
Conclusion (100 – 150 words roughly)

-critical appraisal include 2 parts , “what and why (how is it appropriate)
Eg; The qualitative study was used in this study to explore the live experiences of carer for a family member with dementia. (This is the answer you identify from the study- what)
Using a qualitative approach is appropriate for this study because the aim of qualitative study was to examine human beings experience that is in line with t he aim of this study (Cullum, Haynes & Marks, 2018). (this is justification for why qualitative approach is appropriate with literature support).
- checklist, you could judge the importance of the missing information.
- Content from the article, don’t need to cite the article. Eg: this study used qualitative approach ( no refs required).
- This assignment is about if the research methodology appropriate for the study not much about the “use of analgesic used at the end of life” or “nursing psychotherapeutic intervention for anxiety’
- Reference could be older than 5 years, but have to be reasonably update. Given the nature of this assignment, reference would more likely methodology textbooks, but of course can use journal articles if appropriate.
- critical appraisal – “what” means what study design the article used (yellow part). “Why” – is it appropriate for the study? and justify why it’s appropriate with reference support (Blue part).
- your references are about research methodology – not references or other studies about the study topics. You need references to support your justifications about research methodology, its appropriateness.
- you need to mention the chosen article in introduction with in-text citaiton, you don’t need to reference to the information you identified from the article thereafter.
- please make sure you use the correct checklist.
