AMY’S POST:
After reading Week 7 Learning Resources, provide an example of one concept that you learned in the readings. You may choose any concept or theory that you wish, but you must cite the source, explain how your example is connected to the concept, and finally explain why you feel the concept is important. Your answer should be in the form of a short answer, complete with an opening paragraph, thesis statement, source citation, and conclusion.
Today the media controls how they deliver information to people, but that was not always the case. For example, the Fairness Doctrine regulated how the media could provide the news by ensuring an opposing side was also reported. The Fairness Doctrine is a concept that has been discussed since the beginning of class and came into practice in 1949.
Fairness Doctrine rules would apply to political editorializing where a broadcaster endorsed a particular political candidate they had to allow the opposing candidates to respond to the radio or television station’s political viewpoint (Hendricks, 2022). There was also a lot of debate on whether the Fairness Doctrine violated a person’s first amendment rights, even though the doctrine’s main objective was to ensure coverage of controversial issues and ensure that multiple viewpoints provided a fair overview of the content presented (Hendricks, 2022).
However, in 1987 the FCC repealed the Fairness Doctrine based on an individual’s first amendment rights. Now moving into the 21st century, we see how the Fairness Doctrine would have benefited us more than hindered us in the information we are receiving. Many of us seek many sources of information to provide us with a well-rounded set of information that the Fairness Doctrine would have provided us from the start if it was still active.

BRITTANY’S POST:
A concept I learned in this week’s reading assignment is media convergence. Media convergence. “Convergence modes were the coming together of conversations, entertainment, news, and other media, all delivered electronically. Since then, prolific use of the term has made a single definition of the concept difficult.” (Mello, 2009) Media convergence has multiple definitions and is defined in 5 processes.
An example of media convergence is the use of smart TVs with streaming channels. As mentioned in the video media convergence which was created in 2010 discusses how “By 2015, 60% of all new TVs will have built in network connectivity and 70% will have an app platform.” (Media Convergence, 2010) Now it is 2022 and most households have a smart TV which allows a person to connect their TV with internet and stream TV online.
Media convergence has come a long way with the usage of smart TV’s and especially smartphones making everything easily accessible at the tip of a finger. You can access anything on a smartphone regardless of if it is weather, GPS, favorite TV show, news, social media, you name it, you can access it. It will be interesting to see just how far media convergence will happen in the next 5 years.
